Creating a company in TallyPrime

Creating a company in TallyPrime is the first and essential step to start recording your business transactions. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Launch TallyPrime:

  • Open the TallyPrime application on your computer.

2. Access “Create Company”:

  • If no company is open, TallyPrime will directly display the “Select Company” screen. From here, you’ll see the “Create Company” option.
  • If a company is already open, press Alt + K (Company) from the Gateway of Tally. Then, select Create from the options.

3. Enter Company Details: A “Company Creation” screen will appear where you need to fill in the following details:

  • Company Data Path: This shows the location where your company data will be saved. You can change it if needed.
  • Name: Enter the official and legal name of your company. This name will appear on all your reports and invoices.
  • Mailing Name: This is the name that will be printed on all your invoices and reports. It can be the same as your company name or a different one if you use a specific mailing name.
  • Address: Provide the complete address of your company, including street, city, state, country, and PIN Code.
  • State: Select the state where your company is registered. This is crucial for statutory compliance (e.g., GST in India).
  • Country: Select your country. TallyPrime will automatically apply country-specific statutory settings based on your selection.
  • PIN Code: Enter the postal code of your company’s location.
  • Telephone No.: Enter your company’s phone number.
  • Mobile No.: Enter your company’s mobile number.
  • E-Mail: Enter your company’s official email address.
  • Website: If your company has a website, enter its URL.

4. Set Financial Year Details:

  • Financial Year Beginning From: Enter the start date of your financial year. For most businesses in India, this is April 1st.
  • Books Beginning From: This is the date from which you want to start maintaining your books of accounts in TallyPrime. It’s usually the same as the financial year beginning date, but can be different if you are migrating data or starting new records mid-year.

5. Define Base Currency Details:

  • Base Currency Symbol: This will usually be auto-filled based on your country selection (e.g., ₹ for India).
  • Formal Name: The formal name of the currency (e.g., Indian Rupee).

6. Configure Security Options (Optional but Recommended):

  • TallyVault Password: This is a strong encryption feature for your company data. If you set this, you’ll need to enter this password every time you open the company. It’s an extra layer of security.
  • Use Security Control: Enable this option if you want to set up user-wise access control for your company data. You can define different users with specific roles and permissions (e.g., data entry, administrator). If enabled, you’ll be prompted to set an Administrator Username and Password.

7. Enable Features (F11): After filling in the basic details and accepting, TallyPrime will display the “Company Features” (F11) screen. Here, you can enable or disable various features based on your business requirements. Some common features you might want to enable include:

  • Maintain Accounts: (Usually “Yes” by default for accounting purposes).
  • Enable Bill-wise Entry: To track outstanding bills for debtors and creditors.
  • Maintain Inventory: If your business deals with stock and goods.
  • Enable Goods and Services Tax (GST): If your business is GST registered, enable this and provide your GSTIN.
  • Enable Tax Deducted at Source (TDS): If applicable.
  • Enable Payroll: To manage employee salaries.
  • Enable Cost Centres: To track expenses for different departments or projects.

You can always enable or disable these features later by pressing F11 from the Gateway of Tally.

8. Save the Company:

  • After entering all the details and configuring the features, navigate to the last field on the screen.
  • Press Enter or Ctrl + A to accept and save the company information.

TallyPrime will confirm that the company has been created successfully, and you will be taken to the Gateway of Tally for your newly created company. You can now start creating ledgers, entering vouchers, and generating reports.
